Committee sessions
Committee for patient advocacy (K) Diabetes: the turning point of my life (내 인생의 전환점이 되어준 당뇨병) Chair(s): Sin Gon Kim, Heung Yong Jin
Wednesday 09 October, 13:00~14:30
Room 4
For optimal diabetes management, a shared decision-making process between patients and physicians is crucial, and it is also beneficial for patients to share their experiences with one another. The Committee for patient advocacy of the Korean Diabetes Association organized this session where people living with diabetes, their families, and diabetes care and education specialists exchanged views under the theme, "Diabetes: the turning point in my life." The session highlighted the importance of communication in managing diabetes, discussed the various situations encountered while living with diabetes, and explored ways to overcome these difficulties.

Wednesday 09 October, 14:40~16:10
Room 4
The Korean Diabetes Association, which established the committee for social contribution-the first of its kind among Korean academic organizations-is hosting a symposium on "Social contribution and diabetes" for the first time this year. By inviting social welfare experts, including the inaugural chairman of the CSR Committee, as speakers and panelists, we aim to understand social contribution activities that address the specific needs of people with diabetes. This symposium will serve as a starting point for the KDRF as a non-profit public corporation, fostering in-depth discussions about activities aligned with their identity. Through this event, we aim to raise awareness of diabetes among companies, communities, and the public, and to lay the foundation for individuals to live as healthy members of society, even with chronic diseases.

Diabetic policy forum session (K) A1c in national health screening program, is it necessary? Chair(s): Soo Kyung Kim, Dae Jung Kim
Thursday 10 October, 17:00~18:30
Room 4
This session is hosted by the committee of insurance. Several studies in Korea have shown that glycated hemoglobin (A1c) provides complementary information to Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) and enhances the clinical utility of diabetes screening. In other countries, screening for diabetes is recommended for high-risk groups. However, the "evaluation of the diabetes examination in the national screening program" conducted by the National Evidence-based Healthcare Collaborating Agency (NECA) did not demonstrate the benefit of using fasting blood sugar or glycated hemoglobin for diabetes screening. This forum will discuss the limitations of A1c and explore appropriate methods for integrating it into the national screening program.

Obesity diabetes TFT Management of obese diabetes - debate session Chair(s): Cheol-Young Park, Seung-Hwan Lee
Friday 11 October, 16:00~17:30
Room 2
Obesity is associated with various comorbidities and increased mortality in people with type 2 diabetes. Recently, a weight-centric approach has emerged as an alternative to the traditional glucose-centric approach. The weight-centric approach has the potential to improve outcomes for individuals with type 2 diabetes and reduce the burden of diabetes on the healthcare system. This advancement is made possible by the development of anti-obesity agents that demonstrate a wegith loss effectt of 15% to 20%. In this session, two speakers will debate whether medical therapy alone is sufficient or if metabolic surgery is still necessary for managing diabetes in obese individuals.

Policy proposal by KDA (K) Chair(s): Tae Sun Park, Bong-Soo Cha
Friday 11 October, 16:00~17:30
Room 4
As the majority of diabetes patients are classified as having a mild form of the disease, university hospitals are becoming less involved in providing specialized care for diabetes, which poses a challenge to the training of future medical professionals. However, diabetes encompasses a broad range of pathophysiological mechanisms and prognoses, necessitating a more nuanced approach in which many cases should be classified as severe by nature or in the long term. This symposium aims to address these challenges and propose solutions. Firstly, Professor Young Min Cho from Seoul National University will introduce the concept of "severe diabetes" with a presentation on the classification and diagnosis of severe diabetes. Following this, Professor Jae Hyeon Kim from Sungkyunkwan University will discuss the "definition of diabetes with beta-cell failure" and share policy proposals raised by specific patient populations. Next, Professor Soo Heon Kwak from Seoul National University will give a lecture on the "current status and issues of young-onset diabetes." Finally, Yejin Ha from the Ministry of Health and Welfare will present on the "national policy for the prevention and management of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases." After the presentations, there will be a panel discussion, providing an opportunity for an in-depth exchange of ideas on these important topics.
