Unhealthy dietary behaviors and Korean society: a multidisciplinary view
Chair(s): Tae Sun Park, Woo Taek Jeon
Wednesday 09 October, 16:20~17:50
Room 4

The dramatic rise in diabetes prevalence in Korea can be partly attributed to the shift toward westernized dietary habits. The recent surge in popularity of ultra-processed foods and mukbangs is adversely affecting the health of adolescents and the younger generation, potentially contributing to an increase in diabetes cases. Furthermore, our society's culture of tolerance toward excessive drinking and unhealthy eating habits has exacerbated this trend. This session aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the detrimental effects of unhealthy dietary culture by examining the historical context of dietary culture and diabetes in Korea, analyzing the negative impacts of unhealthy eating based on recent research findings, and exploring the mental health aspects associated with food culture.

This session reviews key research papers published in the field of diabetes and metabolic diseases over the past year. The selected papers include the FLOW study, which examines the impact of semaglutide on chronic kidney disease progression in type 2 diabetes patients, a phase 2 study on the efficacy of a GLP-1/glucagon dual agonist (survodutide) in MASH and liver fibrosis, and the LENS trial, which examined the effects of fenofibrate on diabetic retinopathy as the primary endpoint. The session aims to critically analyze the results, significance, and limitations of each study, providing a comprehensive overview of the latest research trends in diabetes and metabolic diseases.
