Diabetes stigma (당뇨병 낙인 - 편견을 넘어 공감으로)
Chair(s): sunkyung song, Heung Yong Jin
Thursday 25 September, 15:00~16:20
Room 4
(Walker hall 2, 1F)

Diabetes is a chronic condition that requires more than medical treatment-it calls for the support of families and communities. Diabetes stigma refers to the unjust social bias and discrimination faced by people with diabetes, which can harm mental health and reduce treatment adherence. To overcome this, accurate education and empathy-based public awareness are essential. This session, organized by the Committee of Patient Advocacy, will examine the concept and current state of diabetes stigma, present real-world cases from clinical settings, and share practical strategies for stigma reduction. It will also explore directions for future policy and societal change to better protect the rights of people with diabetes. By bringing together people with diabetes, their families, and healthcare professionals, the session aims to deepen empathy and inspire meaningful action.

The Social Contribution Committee has organized this session to highlight the healthcare challenges faced by vulnerable populations excluded from adequate diabetes management due to socio-economic barriers. The session will examine disparities in diabetes care among low-income groups and introduce current community support systems, including public initiatives and public-private partnerships. It will also explore strategies to connect and leverage private sector resources to build sustainable care models. By fostering collaboration across healthcare, welfare, and non-profit sectors, this session aims to identify practical solutions and share insights to improve the quality of life for underserved individuals living with diabetes.
