This session highlights how genetic, genomic, and multi-omic approaches are redefining diabetes subtypes, with particular emphasis on East Asian populations and diabetic kidney disease. These advances will accelerate precision diabetes research and support more individualized prevention and treatment strategies.

This session will explore beta-cell dysfunction, preservation, and recovery in diabetes, integrating clinical features in Asian type 2 diabetes, glucocentric strategies for beta-cell preservation, and emerging quantitative imaging approaches to stress-adaptive beta-cell remodeling. The session will highlight how mechanistic insights can be translated into more precise strategies to restore beta-cell health and alter the trajectory of diabetes.

Lean and nonobese diabetes represents a distinctive phenotype increasingly recognized across Asian populations, where metabolic dysfunction emerges independently of obesity. This session explores the epidemiological characteristics and underlying pathophysiology of lean diabetes across East and South Asia, examines secondary etiologies contributing to its heterogeneity, and presents longitudinal trends in prevalence and clinical features over two decades in Korea. By integrating multi-national perspectives and diverse clinical evidence, this session aims to redefine diagnostic frameworks and therapeutic strategies beyond the conventional obesity-centric paradigm, ultimately advancing precision care for the rapidly growing population with lean or nonobese diabetes throughout Asia.
